Few events in history have captured the attention of scholars more than revolutions.Over centuries revolts have brought about the most radical change of political order in societies – and they have spread, crossing borders and even oceans, at times engulfing entire regions of the world, as seen most recently in the Arab Spring of 2011.
This book, composed of articles from the archives of History Today, takes a considered look at why some of the key revolutions began, how successful they were, and what they left in the aftermath. From the Atlantic revolutions in the 18th century, which began in America and swept overseas to France, to the upheavals of 1848, the early 20th century revolutions in Russia, China, Mexico and on to the events of 1979, this book takes a broad look at the waves of revolutions that have washed away seemingly solid regimes, and shows how, despite the hope with which they are launched, most have ended in disillusionment.

As an ameture history buff, I bought this book because I wanted to learn what I could on what might be considered the great revolutions, particularly the Golden Revolution of 1688 in England. This is a compilation of essays from a history a magazine.I enjoy learning about history but found this book a little difficult to follow. Parts were very complicated and overly detailed. Others were lively and informative. I don't regret the read because it wasn't that long and I made my way through. I also received different author's perspectives.
If you know something of history, but are still a novice, this is somewhat informative read, but of varying pace.
